I rushed home, took a shower, and threw on some comfortable clothes. I grabbed something quick to eat for a late lunch, then contemplated when I would make the call. The sooner the better, I thought. But I was so nervous, I started to overthink everything. Even though Mei clearly told me that Xenia liked me and gave me her number, I couldn’t help but feel terrified. Xenia was the first girl I’d ever had feelings for. Before that, it was only guys on my radar. It’s now or never. I picked up my phone, found Xenia’s name in my contacts, and pushed the call button.

“Hello?” a voice answered on the other end.

I took a deep breath. “Hello, Xenia?”

“Hi, who’s this?”

“It’s Lyric. Mei gave me your number. I hope it’s alright that I called. Are you busy?

“Oh . . . Hi, Lyric. No, I’m not busy. It’s fine that Mei gave you my number. I’m glad, actually.”

I could sense Xenia smiling as she spoke that last sentence. It eased my nervousness, and a peace came over my entire body.

“So, what’s up?” Xenia asked.

“Well, the reason I’m calling is because I have a little crush on you.” I felt my cheeks blushing.

“You do?” There was a hint of excitement in her voice.

“I do. It’s really weird for me to admit that actually. I’ve only liked and dated guys up until this point.”

“Same here! You are the first girl I ever had a crush on.”

“So where do we go from here?”

“Would you be up to going on a date to see if this might go any further?” Xenia asked.

“Of course I would,” I said in the calmest voice ever. On the inside, I had a million butterflies swarming through my stomach. This was the moment I’d been dreaming about since I’d met Xenia.

“Okay, well I’m free this weekend. How about Saturday?”

“This Saturday is perfect,” I said. I started to think about day-date ideas. What could we do? Where could we go? Then my mind automatically switched into panic mode. But how do I act? Will it be different than going on a date with a guy? What will we talk about? Wait, this is Xenia’s first date with a girl too. She’s probably just as nervous as me, I thought, trying to calm myself down enough to finish the call on a good beat.

“So, Saturday it is. I have to get going now,” Xenia said, breaking me out of my thoughts. “But I’m so happy you called, and I will see you this weekend.”

“I’m really looking forward to it, Xenia. Have a great rest of your afternoon. I will see you on Saturday,” I said, smiling.

After I got off the call with Xenia, I wanted to tell Sierra how well the conversation went and that we had a date. As soon the thought entered my mind, I heard keys rustling in the door. I made my way out into the living room. Sierra was already locking the door behind her.

“Hey, Sierra. How was work?” I asked.
